One of the most forgotten EF5 tornadoes in modern history is the Hackleburg–Phil Campbell Tornado that struck northern Alabama on April 27, 2011. Overshadowed by the more famous Joplin Tornado, this tornado was one of the most violent ever recorded in the United States. The Hackleburg–Phil Campbell tornado stayed on the ground for nearly 132 miles and reached a width of about 1.25 miles. With winds estimated at over 210 mph, it carved a path of destruction through several Alabama communities, including Hackleburg, Phil Campbell, Mount Hope, and parts of Tennessee. Entire neighborhoods were swept away, large trees were stripped of bark, and vehicles were thrown great distances. The tornado killed 72 people, making it one of the deadliest tornadoes of the 21st century. Many homes were completely erased from their foundations, and some areas looked as if they had been blasted by an explosion. Meteorologists consider it one of the strongest tornadoes ever surveyed under the Enhanced Fujita Scale. Despite its incredible power and tragic loss of life, the Hackleburg–Phil Campbell tornado is often forgotten because it occurred during the massive 2011 Super Outbreak, which produced dozens of devastating tornadoes across the southeastern United States. The attention given to the Joplin tornado just weeks later also caused many people to overlook the destruction in Alabama. Today, the Hackleburg–Phil Campbell EF5 remains a reminder that some of the most violent tornadoes in history are not always the most remembered. For tornado researchers and storm enthusiasts, it stands as one of the greatest examples of nature’s destructive power and one of the most underrated EF5 tornadoes ever recorded. #tornado #tornadotok #ef5 #creatorsearchinsights #blowthisup
