Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi, the last sovereign king of the Benin Kingdom, ruled from 1888 until the British invasion in 1897. His reign marked the tragic end of one of West Africa’s most advanced and artistically rich precolonial civilizations. Oba Ovonramwen attempted to preserve the independence and cultural integrity of his kingdom amid increasing British commercial and imperial pressure. In 1897, under the false pretext of a diplomatic mission, a British delegation entered Benin territory without consent. This incursion led to conflict, and Britain used the incident to justify a brutal retaliatory expedition. British forces looted, burned, and destroyed Benin City in a calculated campaign of cultural vandalism and imperial domination. Thousands of sacred artworks, particularly the renowned Benin Bronzes, were stolen and shipped to Europe, where many still remain in museums and private collections. The Oba was deposed, humiliated, and exiled to Calabar, where he lived under surveillance until his death in 1914. His forced removal marked not only the dismantling of Benin’s political sovereignty but also the erasure of a complex African governance system that had thrived for centuries. The British colonial administration's actions were neither noble nor civilizing; they were driven by greed, racism, and a calculated effort to suppress African autonomy and heritage. #benin #benincity #africanking #africankingdoms #africanempires #ObaOvonramwen #africa #blackhistory #africanhistory #fyp #viralvideos
