The two buildings of the Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital, destroyed by a Russian missile attack on July 8, 2024, cannot be restored and will be replaced with a new building, partially funded by charitable donations, according to Minister of Health Viktor Lyashko. Electricity and water supply have already been restored in Ohmatdyt, and work is ongoing to restore the operating rooms. Efforts are currently focused on preparing the hospital to welcome back children with cancer. “We are waiting for the completion of the damage assessment, which will determine the cost of construction to address the aftermath of Russia’s terrorist act. By Monday or Tuesday, Ohmatdyt will select a company to carry out the construction work. At that point, we will know the cost and duration of building the new facility,” Lyashko stated. The minister indicated that the old surgical building will likely need to be demolished. In its place, a single, modern building will be constructed to replace the two destroyed ones. “We have received over 800 million hryvnias from various partners, which has been allocated to the charitable accounts of Ohmatdyt. Together with state funds, this will be prioritized for addressing the aftermath of the terrorist act and the construction of the new building. The government and the state will provide additional financing as needed,” Lyashko emphasized. Currently, the cost of the destroyed medical equipment that needs replacement is estimated at 360-400 million hryvnias. However, this is not the final figure, as service engineers are still assessing the condition of equipment that appears intact but may have hidden malfunctions. “Manufacturers and patrons are ready to provide some equipment free of charge,” added the Minister of Health.
