If a customer asks me to use a used engine, it's an automatic 4hr charge up front for compression and leak down tests before I do anything else.

I won’t put a used transmission in unless I personally seen and felt it operating. Engines I will but only after a good inspection

I always overhaul a used engine anyway, that is the best thing to do, customers must know that

Happened to me with a transmission in a 84 mustang GT. 2 times! I ended up rebuilding it. Fortunately they are not that hard to remove.
