In 1963, Ball found himself working as a freelance artist for a life insurance company. Tasked with creating an image to improve morale, Ball made the now iconic smiley face. The design took him all of ten minutes to make, and he was paid $45 for his work. Afterwards, the face's popularity skyrocketed. Thousands were being ordered by the day. By the time Ball contacted patent attorneys in 1971, they told him his work was already public domain. Ball, reportedly, was never bothered by this. His son later quoted him saying: "I figured if I make the world a little happier, OK, fine." Ball never made more than the initial $45.
