Dearest Reader, which would you wear? The modiste tailors more than just silk and one’s choice of dress is rarely an accident. All sources come from real fashion plates from the period - Ackermann’s Repository of the Arts. Here is the timeline of the Regency trends shown in this sequence: Daphne (1814 Evening Gown) The classic "Empire Waist" reigned supreme in 1814. Fashion was obsessed with Greco-Roman statues, meaning debutantes wore sheer, white muslins with short "mamaluke" puffed sleeves to mimic marble columns. Eloise (1814 Walking Dress) This reflects the "Oldenburg Craze" of 1814, named after the visiting Grand Duchess—a woman famous for refusing to bow to English politeness (much like Eloise). The short hair is the "Cut à la Titus"—a radical, intellectual style inspired by Roman emperors. Francesca (1815 Spencer) The cropped "Spencer" jacket was the essential outerwear of 1815. Legend says it was invented when Lord Spencer burned his coat tails! Women adopted the style, often adding military braiding to reflect the ongoing Napoleonic Wars. Hyacinth (1819 Walking Dress) By 1819, the era was shifting. You can see the move away from the straight column silhouette toward a triangular A-line skirt. The hem is detailed with "rouleaux" (padded rolls), a key feature of late Regency style. Violet (1810 Pelisse) A look back at 1810. The Pelisse was a coat-dress that offered a slimmer, more severe silhouette than the later years. It remained a staple choice for modest, elegant daywear throughout the decade. #bridgerton #historytok #janeausten #regency #fashionhistory
