Ann Brzeskiewicz was murdered on October 9, 1977. That evening, Ann, along with her friends, 10-year-old Deborah Hogan and 8-year-old Theresa Hogan, were last seen on a footbridge leading into the woods. When they failed to return home, their parents looked around the neighborhood and then called police to report them missing. Police, neighbors, and a bloodhound searched the entire area through the night. The following morning, all three girls were found lying face down in a shallow, muddy stream. Pools of blood were discovered nearby. Ann and one of the other girls had been stabbed more than 30 times. The third girl had been stabbed a dozen times in the back. They were fully clothed and there was no evidence that they had been sexually assaulted. Police characterized the blows as extremely forceful. After the bodies were discovered, between 50 and 60 county police officers had inched through the woods looking for clues. They followed up dozens of tips telephoned in by members of the community, and had searched through the garbage cans of every home. Five days after the murders, a man named Edward Kreiner called police after finding some objects in his home that led him to suspect his son, Stuart. Kreiner and his wife allowed police to remove material from the house without requesting a search warrant. A hunting knife and a jacket, both covered with bloodstains, were taken from the home. 16-year-old Stuart Kreiner was arrested just hours later. Stuart avoided drugs, alcohol and cigarettes and had never been in trouble with police. Often rejected by his peers for being too straight-laced, Stuart played with neighborhood children a few years younger than himself. After pleading not guilty by reason of insanity, he was ordered by a judge to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. He was tried as an adult for the three murders. Kreiner's lawyer arranged a plea bargain. Kreiner pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for killing Theresa Hogan, and to second-degree murder for killing Ann Brzeskiewicz and Deborah Hogan. He was found guilty of all three murders. The first-degree murder conviction carried a mandatory life sentence, and the second-degree murder convictions carried a maximum of 30 years each. Kreiner was sent to Patuxent Institution to serve his sentences, since he met the criteria for psychiatric treatment there. In July 1982, Kreiner hanged himself in his cell.
