But how can we get the TV off without triggering a major meltdown? ⏰Give your kiddo clear expectations about the TV and stick to them! “The tv will be on for 15 minutes.” Then give them a verbal warning “5 minutes left!” Using a visual timer can also help your child to feel more in control, which decreases power struggles! 👎Whatever you do, don’t negotiate on extending the timer: “ok fine, one more minute.” This can cause confusion in your toddler’s brain about whether you really mean it when you set a boundary. This may lead to more power struggles. 🧠Let your child be an active participant in the transition. Let them choose the next activity, if possible. If not, try to give them another choice “do you want to wear red or blue shoes?” Let them say goodbye to tv and offer to let them press the button to turn it off! #occupationaltherapist #toomuchtv #screentime #tantrums #toddlerbehavior #childdevelopment
