The replacement composite granite/ sandstone gravestone and gravesite of Reverend Dr. Samuel Kennedy, 4th pastor of the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, USA. Born in Scotland and educated in the school of medicine at the University of Edinburgh: Dr. Kennedy and his family arrived in New Jersey in the 1740s. He pursued theological studies at the Presbytery of New Brunswick. He was licensed to preach in 1748 and ordained in 1750 by the Presbytery in New Brunswick. He became the 4th pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge (1751-1787). In addition to being a physician and minister, Reverend Kennedy established the Basking Ridge Classical School, which was designed to prepare young men for college in 1755. Many of his pupils when on to pursue studies at the College of New Jersey (Princeton). During the American Revolutionary War, Reverend and Doctor Kennedy held the rank of captain in the Somerset County Militia. In 1775 local militiamen camped and drilled on the church grounds before heading off to join General George Washington's Continental Army in New York City. Kennedy cared for the men both medically and spiritually during their stay. This is when he received his (largely honorary) officers' commission. There is no record of him participating in any battles during the war. Kennedy was married to Sarah Allen and they had seven children-four boys and three girls. Husband and wife are both buried in the cemetery located in the old churchyard at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church. ℹ️ Encyclopedia of the American Revolution, Farmstead Arts, Presbyterian Church of Basking Ridge, NJ., Somerset County Historical Society 📸 Own work February 28, 2025 (old gravestone is leaning behind the new one shown in photo 3) #history #gravestones #graveyard #oldgraveyard #reverend #americanrevolution #americanhistory #baskingridgenj #colonialamerica #veteran #photooftheday
