@garden4everdil: Tomatoes benefit from added calcium to the soil. So, in lieu of purchasing Bone Meal from the store, you can use crushed eggshells instead!! I collect and dry out my eggshells before crushing them. The chunks of membrane get put into the hole with the roots and I sprinkle the finely crushed eggshell at the base of the plant to get absorbed by the soil and to protect the plant from snails, cut worms and slugs!! Also, if you are using garden twine to trellis your tomatoes, just stick the end of the string into the hole before you put your plant in and bury them together. No need to tie to the stem (which can cause damage later) or stake it down!
