So, with gratitude and admiration, we proudly celebrate them and invite the proud predator to take center stage on their special day. That stage better be a sturdy one to support the 1,700 lb (770 kg) males and 1,000 lb (455 kg) females! However, as ice explorers, the largest living carnivore on earth is familiar with unstable surfaces. Their paws are even specially designed with an extended width to better distribute their weight as they walk, complete with fur to keep them warm on their icy terrain. With this assurance, polar bears often hang out near fractures in the ice, where their favorite fatty prey, seals, are most likely to surface.
