Steinbeck wrote some of his celebrated works with Blackwing pencils, including “The Grapes of Wrath,” which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. A few years ago, we sat down with Thomas Steinbeck, John’s son, to discuss his father’s unique writing rituals. Steinbeck began each morning by sharpening 24 pencils, which he arranged, point-up, in one of two boxes on his desk. As he wrote, he would use each pencil until it dulled, then place it in the second box, pick up a sharp one, and continue writing. #writing #pencil #author #blackwing
