Screaming/yelling is super annoying & also super normal toddler behavior. The reason it turns into a habit is because parents are unintentionally reinforcing the behavior by doing several things wrong….1) Parents are giving a big reaction like yelling back at them to stop, screaming out of shock, or making a dramatic facial expression. All of those reactions light up their toddler’s brain and causes them think “that was fun-let me make that happen again!” 2) Parents who yell back are modeling that behavior and accidentally communicating that yelling is okay. 3) Parents are giving directions like “stop screaming” or “no screaming”, but a toddler is only picking up on the last word their parent said which was “screaming” and they go “okay, I can scream again!” And 4) Parents are trying to extinguish screaming when it’s a normal behavior (they need to learn how to play around with their voice/volume). Instead of trying to get them to stop screaming completely, parents need to REDIRECT & offer appropriate outlets for screaming, like going outside.
