@justonthespectrum: If you’re at a similar point, where the desire to interact with others is noticeably increasing, I suggest adding a similar activity to your routine for just a few minutes daily. We do this every bedtime. It not only provides Michael with a burst of sensory stimulation to release any pent-up energy, but the routine also reinforces a greeting script. Though it’s prompted now, we hope it will become spontaneous over time. This activity is an excellent way to demonstrate how a conversational exchange might feel and appear to him. Also, eye-level positioning is one of many ways I promote natural eye engagement and strengthen our bond. Harnessing the skill for eye contact and gaze direction for non-verbal communication has played a pivotal role in his advancements in both communication and forming connections. This skill, combined with significant advancements in fine motor abilities, is foundational for learning American Sign Language (ASL). Without these critical skills, mastering ASL would be significantly more difficult.
