One year ago today, I decided to take my health back. 2016 was the last time I ever felt truly in shape. Shortly after, in 2017, I joined the corporate world, and while I learned so much and grateful for all the opportunities it gave me, it truly took a toll on my body. While it is possible to do, I was not properly prepared to take on the working load and maintain my health. I left that world in 2021 but for the next couple years I was still mentally back there and no amount of outside voices could snap me out of it. In 2023 I became a dad and for the next 2 years, my wife and I would embark on a journey with our daughter that was anything but the norm - let’s just say my own health was the last thing on my mind. In December 2024, I had the “wake up call” when I received blood results that I had fatty liver disease that could turn into cirrhosis and then in January 2025 another wake up call that I had 2 herniated discs due to too much overuse and pressure. We were pregnant with our son during this time so couple these factors with a growing family that needed me as long as possible, it was no longer about me - my decisions affected other people now. So on January 22nd, 2025 I took on the job to reverse the abuse I put myself through for almost 10 years. It was not easy at first but slowly it’s become a true joy and lifestyle. I benefited in every way one could - mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. My liver disease was reversed and the herniated pains in my spine went away. I also suffered from vertigo spells and I haven’t had one since. I am happy to say I did this the slow and old fashion way - calories in, calories out method. All while still enjoying my breads, desserts, steaks…nutrition knowledge has come a long way. Carbs don’t HAVE to be the enemy. Also exercise and the gym became my best friends! Food consumption is an issue for many people and for me, at times, a way to cope with many things. It’s REAL and there are days I still see the same person I was before and that’s good because as someone who loves food it could be easy to go back. Find your sustainable WHY. Don’t listen to the inner circle birds telling you that you should go to the gym or eat better. Ultimately the greatest changes are the ones that you make in the deepest parts of you for you. And if you ever embark on a journey like this, never strive for daily perfection or focus on the number on the scale. Instead, focus on how you feel, how your moving, how your living- be proud! Nothing is linear here, it takes time. Little by little. Slow and steady wins the race but you start that race when YOU are ready. One year later - started at 252 lbs and nearly 85 lbs later I am now 169 lbs. The job is not done. This is a lifestyle.
