![After 34-year-old Breanna Cecil’s fetus was diagnosed with acrania, a rare, fatal condition in which a fetus does not develop a skull, she struggled to determine her next steps. Because Cecil lives in Tennessee, which has a near-total abortion ban in place so long as the fetus has a heartbeat, she wasn’t given the option to terminate her pregnancy in-state. The following month, Cecil finally managed to get an appointment to have the procedure done in Chicago, Illinois. However, upon returning to Tennessee, Cecil began experiencing a fever and back pain. An ultrasound soon revealed that she had retained tissue from the fetus and had a 9-centimeter abscess in her abdomen. Cecil had to undergo emergency surgery that resulted in her losing her right ovary and fallopian tube. Following the procedure, Cecil has struggled to become pregnant and believes her state’s restrictive reproductive health care laws are largely to blame. ‘The state of Tennessee took my fertility from me,’ Cecil told The Independent.
