First graders aren’t always ready to just “jump in” and write independently—and that’s okay! 📝✨ Writing has honestly been one of the HARDEST things for me to teach, and I always wished I could watch other teachers actually MODEL what to say and do during a writing lesson. So lately, I’ve been using guided writing to meet my students where they are while explicitly teaching the skills they need to become independent writers. We review capitalization, spacing, punctuation, spelling, AND how to use our classroom resources. 👏🏽 Yes, we want students to sound out words—but if the word is right there in their resources, I’m also teaching them the IMPORTANT skill of knowing when and how to use those resources independently. And of course… we have to make it FUN! 😂 We use chants to make those writing conventions STICK!
