When robots take hold of welding torches and laser equipment begins cleaning the next weld area, will machines eventually replace workers? As the person responsible for steel structure and storage tank factories, I do not believe they will. A welding robot is performing on-site welding on a built-up box column in a structural steel frame. Some welds that previously required welders to operate welding torches for extended periods can now be completed continuously by a robot following programmed paths and parameters. At the end, a worker uses a handheld laser cleaning system to remove rust, oxides and surface contaminants from the next weld area, creating cleaner conditions for subsequent fit-up and welding. Machines are good at repetition and consistency. People are good at judgment and responding to change. Component positioning, joint fit-up, programming, seam tracking, equipment monitoring, abnormal-condition handling and quality inspection still require engineers, technicians and experienced welders. I am willing to use more advanced equipment because it can improve efficiency and reduce the time workers spend exposed to heat, arc light, fumes, work at height and repetitive labor. But the more advanced the equipment becomes, the more we need people who truly understand welding, production processes and quality. Machines can replace some operations, but they cannot replace human experience or responsibility for quality. The factories and construction sites of the future will still have workers—what is changing is how people complete the same work. #SteelStructure #SteelConstruction #SteelStructureManufacturer #Robotics #technology
