It's World Autism Day, and this is my friend Mathilda @M A T H I L D A. I am sharing her story to support her, and all the moms and dad’s out here. "Mama" was his first word. The joy and elation of hearing that tiny new voice saying MY name was indescribable. My heart had never felt so complete. Fast forward 13 years, and his words had become my greatest nightmare. "Please, Mama, just let me go." His eyes so heavy, desperate, and bleak, mine wide and overflowing with rivers of tears and fear. I had never felt pain close to this; it burned through every fiber of my being, leaving me stunned and unable to breathe. The idea of losing my child to suicide was unfathomable. Together we lived from minute to minute; for 11 months, I learned to appreciate every second ticked by, for every extra second on the clock was hope. The time equaled opportunity, "Just please give me a few more hours," I would plead. My son is autistic; he feels "too complex for this world." Despite being 16, he is and always will be my baby. I cannot take away his pain no matter how hard I try, and that feeling is suffocating. We have explored many options, but none can alleviate his suffering; he is convinced that this is the best and only solution for him. Autism affects 1% of the population, yet 11% of suicides are people with autism. There is not enough support for the child or the family. I was helpless and stranded, with waiting lists of months and even years in some cases; how was I supposed to convince him that things were happening and help was on its way? As a mother, I would have liked to be able to connect with other parents in a similar position, have more medical/expert help available, tools, meetings, and even be guided through these possibilities at the diagnosis stage. I've never ever felt so alone, and yet I know I cannot possibly be. If any of this resonates with you, please know you are not alone.
