it's trying to get kids comfortable with thinking oh, if I take 2 from the 9, I can make 8+2=10, then I have 7 left over to make 17. so 8+9 is the same as 8+2+7 is 17 instead of memorizing that 8+9=17

it’s just trying to make it easier to solve by using 10 so u split the 9 into 2 and 7 then you do 8+2 which gets you 10 then it’s easy to do 10+7

8+2 makes 10, 7 is left and 10+7 is 17, it basically teaches them how to do simple maths problems in their heads 😊

I think it’s supposed to make it 8+2+7 so you make a ten because 10 + 7 is easier then 8+9… I don’t agree with the method that is just what I assume they want

(9+1)+7 = 10+7 = 17. When adding multiple numbers, kids are taught to “make 10’s” or rearrange the numbers into groups of 10. It helps make adding easier

I used to hate this before I learned it with my kindergartener. It’s called a 10 box problem. Which simply means to move the dots from one 10box to another until you have a whole 10. So the problem

the series of questions is about assessing groups a full rectangle is 10 a full line is 5 and then you add 1-4 ones so 10+5+2

as a dad and having struggled with this, and having no clue because instructions are not clear and no example, it is def easier to do 8+9=17 and to add 30 steps is not intelligent its inefficient
