It’s possible. It’s not a lost battle. They want you to believe it is and just accept the status quo. It’s also no longer a matter of *if* they’re exposed, it’s just a matter of *when* they’re exposed so here are 3 tools to help you prepare for the inevitable. 🧰 TOOL # 1: You can protect your kids by helping them develop a DEFENCE mechanism that teaches them HOW to REJECT explicit content when they see it. Here are the 3 defences (what, why, how) they need to learn: 1️⃣ A definition: This will help them recognize WHAT they’re seeing. Example: “Bad pictures show the private parts of the body we keep covered with clothes. These parts are meant to be kept private.” For older kids you might say: “P*rn is material specifically designed to arouse s*xual feelings in people by depicting nudity, s*xual behaviour, or any type of s*x information in any media”. 2️⃣ A warning: This will give them a reason and tell them WHY to reject it. Example: “People in those videos are abused” or for older kids, “seeing these images can lead you to objectify others and treat them badly”. These can also be anchored in faith-based values! 3️⃣ A plan: This will teach them HOW to respond, so they’re not confused in the moment. Example: “Turn, Run and Tell” - you can practice this with them. The goal with whichever age-appropriate plan you implement should be to: ➡️ help them deal with the initial exposure ➡️ minimize the memories of what they’ve seen that will pop up in their minds 🧰 TOOL #2: Don’t give young children smartphones. Plain and simple. Only use ad-free platforms. No social media apps for kids. Just remind yourself that tech execs are raising their kids tech free and limiting screen time (for good reason). 🧰 TOOL #3: Continue to learn and revisit the conversation with your kids, this should not be a one-time convo! 🔆 The BEST time to talk to your kids? When they’re first exposed to the Internet. Even a 4 year old is ready for this conversation - you can go over the 3 defences with them! 📕 The 3 defences are inspired by the amazing “Bad Picture Good Pictures” books by @jensonkristen - find them in the ‘Resources’ highlight! #raisingkids #childhood #screentime #screenfreeparenting
