There is a loneliness that can come with walking the path of the witch. So much of our practice is intimate. Quiet. Personal. We learn to sit with ourselves, trust ourselves, follow our own intuition, and walk a path that not everyone around us understands. But being a solitary witch does not mean you are meant to do everything alone. You can remain solitary in the majority of your practice and still long for sisterhood. Still gather in circle. Still sit beside other women who understand something in you that is difficult to explain to anyone else. Sometimes, though, we have to search far and wide for those sisters. You may not find them in your town. You may not find them in the places you first look. While the witch has become a very popular archetype, the women who are truly living this path, practicing the craft, doing the inner work, and weaving it into the way they live their lives can still feel few and far between. Don’t stop looking. One thing it’s important to look for is a group that does not challenge your sovereignty. We can practice slightly different than the other witches in our coven and that’s ok. As long as you agree with the way the coven practices together you’re safe in that space. Make sure boundaries are clear on your behalf and that you fully respect the coven lores. There are retreats other than ours. There are circles other than ours. There are covens and gatherings happening in so many places. But sometimes finding your sisters asks something of you too. It asks you to be vulnerable. To walk into a room where you don’t know anyone. To travel somewhere new, to introduce yourself and to share a little piece of your heart. One final thing.. be a safe space for the coven members of the coven you’re entering.. Even in my virtual coven, there are boundaries to help you know how to enter and interact without all the codependency and witch wound threads… There has to be a willingness to post, to speak, and to connect with women who were once strangers. And for women, that can be scary. Many of us carry wounds around sisterhood. Around rejection. Around belonging. Around being seen and wondering if we will still be loved once we are. That is why creating a safe space for women to gather has become so sacred to me. In our virtual coven, we gather for every Sabbat. We learn together, practice together, share our lives, and slowly become part of one another’s stories. You can still be the solitary witch who loves her quiet altar, her sovereign private rituals, and her own sacred practice. And you can also have sisters. Wherever your sisters are, keep looking for them. Sometimes they are not living right down the road.
