So true!! Many young people are counted out- or counting themselves out- of sciences too early in their education. American education & industry often seem too narrowly focused, limiting innovation.

I see this all the time in software development. People from non STEM backgrounds bring such unique perspectives to solving issues.

i work in tech bootcamps and i'll tell you what, employers love data analysts/scientists/engineers who were previously teachers!

Social skills need to be pushed more and anything that will educate and enhance people's emotional intelligence. Social skills matter so much more in a professional career than most realize.

As an Engineer, I totally agree with this take. I'm unconventional because I made my own pathway. I have the development of transferable skills that I brought to the world of engineering. I agree 1/2

I’m a software engineer and unfortunately during the interview process for positions they always ask what you know, which is secondary. They don’t focus on how to solve problems.

STEM is not "the answer" because there is no "the answer". There is "an answer" (or several answers) that fit you. My path: BA in English, PhD in Comp Sci.

I am only recently becoming aware that STEM, while valuable, is not on the leading edge of skills in which strategic personal investment might receive the highest pay off. Many are becoming defensive!

I ended up being the presenter in hard STEM (Ag Science) because I could bridge the researchers and the customers. Communication is a skill!

as a software engineer for the last 25yrs I can say we used to try to hire soft skills first. the technical was easier to teach. now it's always tech first.
