@erinrackham: Anyone else feel this way about growing up in a high-demand religion? 🧐 #ExMormon #exmo #exvangelical #ward666 #religioustrauma #depersonalization #derealization #cptsd #dissociativeidentitydisorder #dissociation
Yes but the opposite like I was playing a game of religion and I couldn’t wait to get out of it

I felt disassociated from the world at larges problems, but hypervigilant about my own interactions with other people. It psyched me out having god watch me all the time.

I experienced this. Related: I wish I had more wholeheartedly worked toward a career rather than finding something to “fall back on.”

Not ex Mormon but Ex Jehovahs Witness (very similar). Getting over living in a constant state of “the world is ending any day” was an additional trauma as well as everything you mention here.

Yes! 110%. Soooo many of my exmo and ex-religious clients often have much higher levels of dissociation than any other population I see.

Bednar gave a talk called “Things as they really are” in 2009. This reminds me of that talk that minimized physical reality in favor of spiritual reality.

Yes! My therapist pushed me into being ocd with religion. My Scrupulosity was rewarded and praised by EVERYONE around me. My thoughts aren’t making sense, but… yes!

yes. all that mattered was the next life. it has been really hard dealing with the fallout of not embracing everyday like there is no after life because now I don't believe there is and I would've..

🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️I thought I had deconstructed but coming out and leaving the church was like taking off the rose colored glasses.

For me it was realizing that the famous scientists and leaders were actually more awesome than I gave them credit for because they accomplished the things I would have given god the credit for.

I grew up with this very language, saying “the only thing that matters… the only thing that is real is ..[insert church doctrine] … it was exactly this. I still view life like a game 😑

I’ve always felt this way until recently and I’m not from that faith but this is common other religious people as well. I’ve always felt like the real world wasn’t real and it was all a game and also

Oh my gosh... yes! This is such a dangerous mind set because it makes people not care about society and our planet. They are just waiting out the clock almost...

YUP. Except when I left, my world became real. I now feel everything acutely and I get overwhelmed with simple things like movies bc before I had distanced myself mentally from it all.
