When a baby has torticollis, it means that the muscle on the side of the neck (sternocleidomastoid muscle) has suffered a small injury. This injury usually occurs during birth. Signs of torticollis: 🎈The baby prefers to tilt the head to one side and turn the head to the other side. There’s usually decreased range of motion. 🎈May result from a complicated vaginal birth or c-section. 🎈After some time, you may notice a flat head on one side and possibly displacement of the ears (plagiocephaly). 🎈Sometimes, a small round 'ball' may be felt inside the muscle on the side of the neck. If present, this is a strong sign of torticollis. If you suspect that your child has torticollis, it’s important to start physical therapy as soon as possible. The treatment for torticollis is exercises that stretch the shorter side and strengthens the opposite side. It is also important to learn to position the baby correctly during sleep. Unfortunately, torticollis does NOT correct itself and manual therapy is NOT enough! If your child has torticollis, you likely receive skilled help from your local physical therapist. But if you don’t or if you want to make sure you are doing best practice torticollis exercises and that you have the correct positioning advice, I want you to know that this is all in my video based online program “Develobaby- Preferred side” that you find on my homepage.
