BUHWEJU KINGDOM. Buhweju kingdom was a highland kingdom located in the modern districts of Buhweju, Bunyaruguru, Kitagwenda and Ibanda. It was founded around 1650-1700 by Kinyonyi of the Baliisa/Bariisa clan of the Larger Bagahe clan. Kinyonyi is said to have come from the Bugahe a region that was found in what is was Karagwe -Ndorwa region south of Nkore and migrated north with his two brothers Kataizi, Rugo and their sister following a miraculous eagle which was foretold that it will lead them into the prosperous land. Their brother Kataizi got exhausted and remained in Buhweju for them they proceeded. The eagle led them to the Bunyoro kingdom palace where they requested for refugee and the Omukama of Bunyoro admired their sister and I turn married her. In his appreciation the Omukama offered them hundreds of cows and authority to govern the hilly provinces of Buhweju and Buzimba for him as tributaries as they had left their brother behind. Kinyonyi was given Buhweju and a royal drum Mashaija and Rugo took Buzimba. Kinyonyi's Buhweju kingdom under his successors grew prosperous, stronger and expanded to later subdued Buzimba and sorrounding regions of Kitagwenda and Bunyaruguru and later parts of Kashaari and Ibanda as she kept strong collaboration with Bunyoro kingdom. Buhweju remained strong and powerful until Omugabe Mutambuka and Ntare of Nkore started his expansionist campaigns northwards and annexed Kashaari and Nyabushozi areas. Buhweju was later defeated and annexed to the British Ankole in 1901 after the killing of Omukama Ndagara who was later succeeded by his little son Daudi Ndibarema in 1901-1967 whose title was changed from Omukama to Kangaho under the British rule and Omugabe Bwa Ankole.
