Cover letters are an excellent opportunity for you to explain an extenuating circumstance, reasons for a gap on your resume or if you are looking to switch industries. If you have been a teacher for years but want to get into real estate explain the reasons why in a cover letter.   Situation #2- If you are applying to jobs in academia or the government you will most likely be required to submit a cover letter.
