AI is typically used to screen candidates for human review, and I know it was used at Microsoft, at a minimum to parse my resume, when I applied.

AI can augment the recruiter in making decision but can’t make any decisions by itself. I.e. it can tell if someone is a good match based on qualifications relative to what’s posted.

You are wrong-ish. Google uses AI to screen resumes. Most likely the AI scores the resumes and the recruiter cuts anyone below a certain level.
