FWIW, Clavell was a prisoner of war in a Japanese prison camp. He came out of that, wrote his first novel about his experience in that camp, and then he wrote a whole saga of historical fiction

The main character is Toronaga, who is based on Tokugawa, and the white samurai was his right hand man. It’s basically all real history with the names changed.
