@femalequotient: Women are often made to feel disregarded and dismissed when it comes to the many health conditions that exclusively affect them. What does this look like? Being misdiagnosed, under-diagnosed, not receiving proper treatment or receiving the wrong treatment. And the numbers are worse for Black women. Black women face a maternal mortality rate is 3X higher than that of white women. Racism in healthcare puts Black women’s lives at risk. In fact, only 5.7% of U.S. physicians are Black. Gender and racial biases within the healthcare system affects diagnoses, treatment plans, and overall care for patients. Other ways in which bias can affect healthcare practice include: ➡️ Overlooking symptoms which leads to delayed or improper treatment ➡️ Biased attention and respect affect patient experiences and care ➡️ Biased research perpetuates unequal representation and recommended treatments ➡️ Communication barriers contribute to misunderstandings and misdiagnoses ➡️ Lack of diversity amongst healthcare workers, specifically doctors, perpetuates systemic biases Thank you, Dr. Karan Rajan for being an advocate for #womenshealth.
