Zinnias are cut and come again. If you pinch them after they reach about 1’ they give more blooms and will last til first frost

Did you just use the one bag of seeds? Also, you just put regular top soil down and put seeds on top, and hubby pounded them in with his feet, the n more topsoil on top and water daily?
