brass is a mixture of copper and zinc- zinc is very reactive so it's essentially coated/mixed in with copper to make it less reactive. the tarnishing treatment is probably acidic, which decays 1/2

For the larger hardware, you could always try rub n buff to correct the discoloration.

Chemist…. I think it has something to do with oxidizing the brass to make it look aged.
