@genericartdad: I'll be the first to admit navigating our needs & the needs of others can be confusing, especially in romantic relationships. But we don't get to hide behind our autism to propagate hate or bigotry, to avoid accountability, or to steamroll the needs of others. #actuallyautistic #audhd #audhder #audhdtiktok #audhdwomen #latediagnosedautistic #latediagnosedautism

I always say an excuse is trying to get out of trouble, and explanation is accepting the consequences but offering a reason. since most people ask why you did what you did 🤷

the number of times i’ve had to explain that “i’m allowed to be offensive/rude without consequences” is not a valid accommodation request…

Explanations work WITH accountability, excuses work AGAINST it.

honestly as an autistic person I think someone being autistic only makes it more important to call out their harmful behaviors bc it can be harder for us to intuit when our actions hurt others

Boundaries in this case are If the store is overstimulating, then I might have to leave, put earplugs on, hide in the bathroom. Boundaries are not, someone else (cashier) must fix my problem.

thank you much. our friend group has a friend that constantly avoids apologizing and just says "oh yeah I'm autistic" after being rude to folks :/

Excuses are explanations without accountability. In my experience they tend to be the same words, but with or without an apology/beneficial change afterwards

What I always say is: My mental illness is not my fault but it is my responsibility. Especially after years of learning about what does what to my adhd. Accountability is key.

Headphones/Earplugs and shopping services are accomidations, so the guy who suggested doing that is suggesting accommodations.

I had a very awful ex-friend who just tried to use their autism as an excuse as to why they guilt tripped us and constantly avoided accountability. Thanks for explaining this 🫂

it's also worth noting that delivery services and earplugs are accommodations.

“An explanation means you take ownership and make a plan”. I love that. I’ve had trouble explaining the difference before. I’ll definitely use this now

Now I’m so confused how saying I’m sorry I lashed out because I was overstimulated is an excuse😭 I usually add a “I shouldn’t have spoken to you like that” but I thought it was an explanation???
