A Silent Voice (Japanese: 聲の形, Koe no Katachi, lit.

A Silent Voice (Japanese: 聲の形, Koe no Katachi, lit. "Shape of Voice") is an anime film based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Ōima. The film is produced by Kyoto Animation. It was released in Japan on September 17, 2016, spanning 130 minutes. Plans for an animated film adaptation were announced in November 2014, with Kyoto Animation confirmed to produce the film in November 2015 . The story follows Shōya Ishida, a boy who in elementary school leads his class in bullying Shōko Nishimiya, a transfer student who was born deaf. He mocks her, throws dirt in her face, and repeatedly pulls out her hearing aids—once so violently that blood drips down her ears . When the principal learns of the bullying, Shōya's friends turn on him, framing him as the sole perpetrator. Shōko is forced to transfer to another school, and Shōya is left socially isolated, with his reputation as a bully following him through middle and into high school . Now a depressed high school loner who believes suicide is his only absolution, Shōya tracks down Shōko at the sign language center she attends to return her notebook—the one she used to communicate with classmates years ago. He has taught himself sign language specifically to apologize to her. Shōko accepts his apology, and the two begin to tentatively reconnect . Shōya slowly builds a new circle of friends: Tomohiro Nagatsuka, a similarly friendless classmate who becomes his fiercely loyal best friend; Yuzuru Nishimiya, Shōko's protective younger sister who initially poses as Shōko's boyfriend but eventually bonds with Shōya; and later, a group of former classmates including the kind Miyoko Sahara, the narcissistic Miki Kawai, and Naoka Ueno—who bullied Shōko alongside Shōya in elementary school and still resents Shōko for "causing" his downfall . As the group attempts to make a film together for a school competition, buried conflicts resurface. Naoka physically attacks Shōko; Miki exposes Shōya's past to play the victim; and Shōya, overwhelmed by guilt, isolates himself once again. Believing she is the cause of everyone's suffering, Shōko attempts suicide by jumping from her apartment balcony during a fireworks festival. Shōya saves her but falls into the river below, rendered comatose . When Shōya awakens, he finds that his friends have rallied around him. He reconciles with them, completes the film (which, while a failure, helps him heal), and finally confronts his own self-loathing. He admits to Shōko that he once planned to kill himself but has decided against it, asking her to help him keep living. At the school festival, Shōya finally allows himself to see the faces of those around him—the Xs he had imagined over people's faces fall away as he cries, having found redemption . A Silent Voice has been highly acclaimed by critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 95% approval rating, with the critical consensus reading: "As beautifully crafted as it is powerfully written, A Silent Voice looks at teen bullying from a soberingly hard-hitting perspective that's uncommon for the animated medium" . Makoto Shinkai, director of Your Name, called it a "fantastic piece of work" and a "polished and grand production" . The film won Best Animation of the Year at the 26th Japan Movie Critics Awards and was nominated for the Japan Academy Film Prize for Excellent Animation of the Year .
