I don't agree, these days a subject is too vast for a general overview. Mathematics is a great example. If you specialise in one area you are most certainly prepared to go to other areas.

nah reading a very specialised book is not a good way to generalise. You only do that if you are already a generalist expert in that area. What you need is a generalist way of thinking

AI is also going to erase a part of specialist work unless you’re amongst the very best. It’s safer to be a generalist or rather a multi specialist.
