When I first started needle felting freestanding sculptures I took some pride in being able to say that there was no armature of any kind- it was just wool, through and through. It felt like a triumph to be able to say that I compressed wool into felt firmly enough that it could hold up its own weight. That was silly. What does that get you? There aren't really needle felting purists out there; it's too new of an art form, there is no established historical 'right' way to mechanically tangle wool fibers into the nonwoven matted fiber we call 'felt.' There are no points for proper technique; there's what works for what you're trying to do. So I kept experimenting, and this is one of the ways I figured out to bulk out a form before I even started the needle felting part. If you want to learn from my experiments in person, I have three different workshops scheduled for this year, each multi-day adventures in different regions. You can learn more about each through my Workshops page (link in bio); but here are the basics: . July 15-19: at the Textile Center in Minneapolis, MN @textilecenter . August 15-18 at Willowpond, San Luis Obispo, CA @willowpond . and September 29-October 3 at the Pacific Northwest Art School on Whidbey Island, WA @pnwas . If you can't get to any of those, I also have a video-based class that you can access anytime, anywhere (also linked in my bio). . #needlefeltingworkshop #needlefelting #needlefeltinghowto #learnneedlefelting #sculpturalneedlefelting #stephaniemetz
