@geography_joe: Examining Michigan’s population map! #Michigan is the 10th most populous state, with about 10.1 million residents (more than 105 countries), but the overwhelming majority of these residents live in the southern 1/3 of the state, with nearly half of the state living in metro #Detroit alone, which includes large cities like #AnnArbor, #Warren, #Dearborn, #SterlingHeights, etc. Other major population centers in southern Michigan include #Flint, #Saginaw, #GrandRapids, #Kalamazoo, #Muskegon, #BattleCreek, and the capital #Lansing, but the further north you go, not only does the land become less suitable for agriculture, but the harsher winters get, which helps explain why the #UpperPeninsula is only home to 3% of Michigan’s population (despite being 1/3 of the state’s land area). #Marquette, the biggest city in the UP, is the 95th most populous municipality in the state. Once you go north, the economy of Michigan becomes much more reliant on mining, timber, and tourism, which are not typically industries that command large population centers, but it does explain why #TraverseCity is so large, as its the gateway to a major tourism region within the state, nearby #SleepingBearDunes and the islands of #LakeMichigan.
