Another day, another vet appointment… Avocado Toast wouldn’t leave the coop in the morning. Her symptoms were even more subtle than HashBrown’s. I honestly thought she might just be faking it for attention because she missed HashBrown. Unfortunately, an X-Ray confirmed that she was egg bound. Luckily it only took about a minute after she got a calcium injection for her to pass the egg on her own. At the moment she seems to be doing quite well. She is eating, drinking, & swimming🥚 Most commonly this would be caused by a calcium deficiency, but my ducks have two free choice calcium supplements and have been getting live minnows which have an even higher mineral absorption rate. I initially assumed HashBrown’s issue was a result of her breed and size. While it’s not unlikely for any first time layer to have difficulty, it’s more common for call ducks to get egg bound compared to most other breeds due to their small size. My ducks are considerably larger than the typical call ducks because they are pet quality and not bred extra small for show (except Sugar). HashBrown was lighter than my other ducks though. Now another one of my ducks has also started laying eggs (I’m assuming Munchkin) without any issues. SO I am wondering if this is simply a case of bad genetics making egg laying more difficult for these two in particular. I am hopeful that Toast will be able to naturally pass eggs in the coming days though, and I will continue doing absolutely everything I can for her. She is not a good candidate for the implant that stops egg laying at this time, but if this continues I will consider it. #DunkinDucks #Ducks #CallDuck #EggBound #PetVet
