The wood is harder or softer depending on grain, yes. But also species. Oak for example is much harder and heavier if the grain is further apart.

Super interesting- I’ve heard that if you’re using these for decking, the placement will determine if the boards will warp and curl upwards along the edges and be a tripping hazard, or curl downwards, over time (looking at the end, if it’s a “smile” or a rainbow shape)
