Presidential hopeful @George Goh Ching Wah 's latest statements to the media have left Singaporeans baffled. No, we’re not referring to his statements on Singaporeans needing “chain”. In what seems to be an attempt to further hammer home his “independent candidate” status, Mr Goh said during his latest door-stop interview on Sunday (16 July) that:

Presidential hopeful @George Goh Ching Wah 's latest statements to the media have left Singaporeans baffled. No, we’re not referring to his statements on Singaporeans needing “chain”. In what seems to be an attempt to further hammer home his “independent candidate” status, Mr Goh said during his latest door-stop interview on Sunday (16 July) that: "One, the candidate must be non-partisan — basically not involved with any political party. Two, I highlighted that the candidate should also not be involved in any grassroots activity or any advisor role." Mr Goh added that the candidate should not hold any appointment in any government-linked corporation or sovereign wealth funds: "Once you have a sovereign fund involved in your organisation, it's difficult to be independent." Those 3 points were a repeat of what Mr Goh said during a recent interview with Assistant Professor Walid Jumblatt Abdullah from Nanyang Technological University. The latter point pertained to Mr Ng Kok Song, former chief investment officer of Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC. Mr Ng, who is currently executive chairman of investment firm Avanda Investment Management, has said that he is considering contesting in the upcoming presidential elections. Singaporeans have questioned the legitimacy of Mr Goh’s other statements about how candidates should not be involved with any political party or involved in grassroots activities. Those statement appear to be aimed at potential PE2023 candidate and ex-PAP member and former Jurong GRC MP Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Many Singaporeans were hopeful that PSP founder and current chairman Dr Tan Cheng Bock would resign from the party and contest PE2023 to “finally” become President of Singapore. A former PAP MP commended for his gentlemanly approach going into PE2011, the popular Dr Tan lost by less than 1 percent to ex-PAP minister Dr Tony Tan. Dr Tan is also known for being very actively involved in grassroots activities during his time as MP – the People’s Association even sent him an invite to an Istana party for grassroots leaders...
