Sensory-seeking behaviors, such as motor restlessness before and during sleep, are quite common in babies. A common characteristic among these signs is the baby’s desire for sensory stimulation to calm down and fall asleep. Examples include: 🎈Physical movement: The baby attempts to sense their own body’s boundaries by moving around and flapping their arms and legs (similar to what my daughter does in the video). 🎈High need for movement to sleep (e.g., bouncing baby hammock, pram/stroller, pilates ball). 🎈High need to be held tightly/wrapped. 🎈High need for sucking (breastfeeding, pacifier). 🎈Continuous head movement back and forth. 🎈Pressing up against the side or head of the bed. 🎈Sleep difficulties where the cause is not obvious are often sensory-related. If neither you nor your baby is bothered by these behaviors, you don’t have to take any action. It’s completely normal for a baby to want to be held, to want to suck, and to require some movement. However, if these behaviors are pronounced and thereby challenging the well-being of your baby or your family in any way, I want you to know that in most cases, they can be addressed by stimulating the primary senses with simple exercises.
