I understand why people are questioning what happened since she identified herself as the Tampa police chief and showed her badge. If that influenced the officer’s decision, then that is a legitimate concern. That said, she was not the one driving. Her husband was driving the unregistered golf cart, so any special treatment ultimately benefited him. To me, the bigger issue is the officer’s decision. Regardless of who was sitting in the passenger seat or whether a badge was shown, it is still the officer’s responsibility to enforce the law fairly and consistently. If the officer chose not to do that because of who she was, then the accountability should not fall solely on her. The officer also has to answer for that decision because it was his responsibility to enforce the law, and he chose not to. If the only violation was an unregistered golf cart, I do not think that alone warranted the level of scrutiny she ultimately faced.
