The 2017 Wichita swatting incident was a tragic example of “swatting” in the United States, where a prank 911 call leads to a serious police response. It began with an online argument between two Call of Duty players over a $1.50 bet. After the argument escalated, one of the players asked Tyler Barriss, known for making prank 911 calls, to “swat” the other player. Barriss called 911 from Los Angeles, telling dispatchers that he had shot his father, taken family members hostage, and was threatening to burn the house down. However, Barriss gave an address in Wichita, Kansas, that he believed belonged to the other player. It actually belonged to Andrew Finch, who had no connection to the dispute. When Wichita police responded, Finch stepped outside to see why officers were at his home. Police, believing they were dealing with a violent situation, mistook Finch’s actions as threatening and fatally shot him. Finch was unarmed and had no knowledge of the hoax. This incident shocked the U.S. and highlighted the deadly consequences of swatting. Barriss was eventually arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison, while the incident prompted conversations around stricter anti-swatting laws and improved police response procedures. #truecrime #wichita #swatt #truestory #kansas #crimetok #truecrimecomunnity
