It’s based proportions. So XXL would be scaled up and cut to (roughly) the same proportions as a small or medium, and a 1x/2x+ is sewn from patterns that are designed with different b-w-h ratios.

XXL is technically straight size, whereas 1x and up are plus size and use different patterns usually

I always thought XXL was like an extension of their straight size pattern, but 1X, 2X, etc are plus which are cut from different base patterns

Its L XL XXL 1X 2X and so on, once you get to 1X youre using a plus size pattern as opposed to a sized up straight size pattern

So at 22/24 I’m a 3x or 2x depending on the brand. 18/20 2x, 14/16 1x, 12/14 XXL, 10/12 XL

XXL is technically a straight size so it’s just graded up, where a 2X is plus sized and based on plus size bodies essentially

it's worse cause the difference isn't consistent between companies - in a lot of brands I can put both a 2x and xxl on my body but the 2 x will be too wide in shoulders and a xxl not button

I think they’re only considered different if that particular brand has a plus size line. Otherwise the xxl and 2x are interchangeable

I tend to think of a 2X as a men’s cut like a t-shirt and a xxl as a women’s cut (generally narrower)

someone who works in pattern making/sizing grids needs to tap in here…they are different sizing grids and some in technical design can tell you

Cut. I always feel with me it's plus side chest boobage allowance . I will try on a xl and it will fit everywhere but there but a 1x will fit fine. same with the 2x and xxl
