In Islam, honoring our parents is not merely an act of kindness, it is one of the greatest acts of worship after worshipping Allah alone. The Qur’an repeatedly connects His right with the rights of parents, reminding us that gratitude to them is part of gratitude to Allah. Allah says: “Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be good to parents. If one or both of them reach old age with you, do not even say to them ‘uff,’ nor rebuke them, but speak to them with noble words. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say: ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.’” Surah Al-Isra (17:23–24) Notice that Allah did not only prohibit abuse or harshness, He prohibited even the smallest expression of annoyance: “uff.” This teaches us that respect for parents begins with our words, our tone, our patience, and our attitude. The Prophet ﷺ said: “May he be humbled! May he be humbled! May he be humbled!” It was asked, “Who, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “The one whose parents, one or both of them, reach old age during his lifetime, and he does not enter Paradise (by serving them).” — Sahih Muslim 2551 Every sacrifice they made, every sleepless night, every silent prayer, and every hardship they endured for us is known to Allah. Even if they were imperfect, Islam commands us to accompany them with kindness and respect. If they ask us to disobey Allah, we do not obey them in that matter, but we still continue to treat them honorably. If your parents are alive, cherish every opportunity to serve them. Visit them, speak gently, make them smile, help them without being asked, and make sincere du’a for them. If they have passed away, do not think your duty has ended. Continue making du’a for them, seek forgiveness for them, give charity on their behalf, fulfill their lawful promises, maintain the ties of kinship they loved, and honor their friends. Take a moment today and sincerely ask Allah: “Our Lord, forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day the account is established.” Surah Ibrahim (14:41) And never stop saying: “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.” Surah Al-Isra (17:24) May Allah grant our parents good health, forgiveness, mercy, tranquility, and Jannat al-Firdaws. May He bless those whose parents are alive and shower endless mercy upon those whose parents have returned to Him. Ameen. #Islam #Quran #Parents #IslamicReminder #jannah
