@history.mae: This is a classic Persian tale from the Book of Kings (Shahnameh). When Ferdowsi wrote the epic in the 10th century, his primary goal was to preserve the language, culture, stories, and traditions that made up pre-Islamic Persia. The Shahnameh is commonly considered to be the most important literary work for modern Persians. The Iranian warrior, Rostam, goes to enemy territory, Turan, in search of his horse. The local ruler receives him generously and promises to find the horse. He invites Rostam to stay for a night. Rostam accepts and spends the night with princess Tahmine. Rostam gives her a bracelet and tells her that if the child is a daughter she should fasten it in the girl’s hair and if it is a boy, she should put the bracelet on his arm. The next morning, Rostam’s horse is found and he returns to Iran. A son is born and named Sohrab. As he enters manhood, he is anxious to be reunited with his father. He goes to Iran with an army, hoping to see his father and to place him on the throne of Iran. The Persian generals conceal Sohrab’s identity from Rostam. They fight several times. When they meet, Sohrab asks Rostam to reveal his identity, which Rostam refuses, according to the rules of chivalry. In the first fight, the young Sohrab throws Rostam down, but a feeling of compassion overcomes him. In the next combat, Rostam throws Sohrab down. Fearing that the young warrior might stand up, he immediately thrusts his dagger into Sohrab’s side. Sohrab, dying, tells Rostam that his father will avenge his death and only then do they realize their identities. Sohrab shows the armband amulet that Rostam once gave Tahmina, who gave it to her son to keep him safe during the war. #History #mythology #iran #persian #art

It's a little bit like the story of Oedipus, minus the whole "knocking boots with his mum" part

Similar to an Irish myth about Cuchulain. Yeats wrote a great poem based on it.

reminds me of the Irish myth hero Cú Chulainn and Connla; the son he didn't know he had. Very similar ending 🥲

it wasn't "impregnating a foreigner", it was a marriage, a love story. they only spend one night as a married couple and Tahmine was pregnant by that night and Rostam had to leave his wife for joining the army for a battle. it was a romantic relationship. Tahmine stayed loyal to her husband even though he was absent for long years, and Rostam was also loyal to her too.
