Virginia Bucket List Hike for Kids: Westmoreland State Park 📍Montross, VA Located on 1,321 acres on the Potomac River's Northern Neck, Westmoreland State Park has 6 miles of trails, a playground overlooking the river, boat ramps & rentals, a fishing pier & campsites. It’s also located nearby George Washington’s birthplace & James Monroe’s birthplace, and it’s on the National Register of Historic Places. 🦈 The biggest highlight for families is Fossil Beach. Ancient shark teeth (from 5-25 million years ago!!) can be found along this hiking beach. •••••• Things to Know 💥 It’s abour 1h20m from #rva . 💥It’s open from dawn to dusk daily. The visitor center is open daily 8am-4pm. 💥 Parking costs $7 in off season & $10 on weekends April-October. 💥It has swimming beaches, boat launches, cabins, an amphitheater, discovery center, fishing pier, playground, picnic shelters & more. 💥There are multiple parking lots - one is by the playground & one is by the visitor center. 💥The Visitor Center has bathrooms, vending, snacks & exhibits. Pick up the fossil guide, tree bingo & bird field checklist here! 💥We saw a turtle & snakes in the Visitor Center. We also got to see the 1,000lb fossil of a Baleen Whale!! 💥The playground has partial to full sun in the summer. 💥 Fossil Beach is about a .6 mile hike (~20m walking with kids). The dirt path has inclines similar to those at Maymont. 💥An all-terrain stroller or wagon works to Fossil Beach, but it’s not an easy trip. 💥After storms & during low tide are the best times to look for fossils. 💥There are two other stroller friendly trails: Conservation Corps Fitness Trail (1.6m) & Rock Spring Pond Trail (.6). 💥The trails have great tree cover (summer).
