There’s something so bittersweet about listening to somebody complain that they haven’t seen their best friend in two days when you would genuinely give anything to spend even one afternoon with yours. 😭 Because it’s not that their feelings aren’t valid. Missing somebody you love is completely understandable, no matter how long you’ve been apart. But when your best friend lives hours away, or life has somehow managed to put months between your last hug and your next one, hearing somebody say they can’t survive forty-eight hours without their person makes you realize just how much you’ve been missing. You start thinking about all the little things you used to take for granted. The random late-night drives with absolutely no destination. The spontaneous food runs where you’d spend twenty minutes deciding what to eat and somehow end up ordering the exact same thing as always. The times you’d sit in somebody’s bedroom for hours, talking about everything and nothing, laughing so hard that somebody’s parents would eventually tell you to be quiet. And the funniest part is that you probably didn’t even realize those were memories you were going to miss so much while they were happening. They were just ordinary days. You didn’t know that one random Tuesday would eventually become the last time you got to hang out before life started pulling you in different directions. Maybe one of you moved away for school. Maybe somebody got a new job, started a relationship, or had responsibilities that made spontaneous plans nearly impossible. And suddenly, the friendship that used to exist in everyday moments has to survive through phone calls, voice messages, random TikToks, and those occasional texts that say, “I miss you so much, we seriously need to plan something.” 😭 And you always mean it. Every single time. But somehow another week passes, then another month, and before you know it, you’re looking through old pictures realizing how long it’s actually been since you’ve seen each other. Sometimes something hilarious happens and your first instinct is to turn toward them, only to remember they’re not standing beside you anymore. Sometimes you hear a song that reminds you of a specific car ride together, and suddenly you’re smiling at a memory that also makes your chest hurt a little. And sometimes you just wish you could skip all the scheduling, traveling, and complicated planning and show up at their house like you used to. But there’s something beautiful about friendships that can survive that distance. The kind where you might go a while without seeing each other, but when you finally reunite, the connection still feels familiar. You don’t have to force conversations or pretend to be somebody different. You just pick up where you left off, catching each other up on everything that’s happened while laughing about the same ridiculous memories you’ve already talked about a hundred times. Of course, maintaining a long-distance friendship takes effort from both people, and missing somebody is a reminder to make time for each other whenever possible. But distance doesn’t automatically make a friendship less meaningful. Sometimes it simply teaches you how precious that connection really is. Because the hardest part of having a best friend who lives far away isn’t wondering whether you’re still close. It’s knowing that the person who makes ordinary days feel extraordinary is somebody you can’t just casually spend an ordinary day with anymore.
