Wade in the water scared me as a child. “God’s gonna trouble the water” line always creeped me out.

Gospel is soul stirring…..I don’t think it’s actually “scary”, it’s tapping into something that our body remembers, but our minds don’t understand.

Nah if Peele remixed “I know I’ve been changed” like he did “5 on it.” That would be unsettling in a trailer

older gospel music definitely can fall into the southern gothic genre easily but it’s also southern gothic in itself if that makes sense

I feel like the unsettling feeling is because it’s unlocking an ancestral memory. I find that it’s powerful & it makes me teary when I hear Walter Hawkins or Mahalia Jackson.

There's a leak in this old building and my soul has got to move - the ones that are scary are the ones about death

I think it’s because most of them are songs we hear at funerals

As a person who believes epigenetics is a crossover between science and spirit. I too find it fascinating why people have these fears of these songs. Like maybe the fear is passed down. 🤔🤔

the “scariest” songs got the most power in them… the voices, the drums, especially the ones with hand clapping and stomps as the beat

Also you may be scared because the ancestral spirit can be felt within the song

That ‘scary’ feeling I use to get growing up Christian is something I use to avoid. But now as a spiritualist who Moreso practices closer to ATR, like hoodoo, I crave that ‘scary’ feeling.

It’s frequency too tho. So the frequency it was written in could have been a frequency of fear. Someone could have written the song as a release of that fear thusly trapping the fear in the song.

Gospel songs make me feel like I'm at home. By home I mean with my ancestors, my people, etc. It's so beautiful and deep.

Yea because although not gospel, some of those little jingles that go with the hand clapping games used to reeeally spook me. It’s definitely how they’re used in film and tv though.
