In Souls on the Banks of the Acheron, we witness a striking image: a crowd swirls around the figure of Hermes Necropompos, seeking help to cross the Acheron river that separates them from the world of the dead. To achieve that, they must cross in Charon’s boat, which will take them to the other side of the shore, and from there, they can finally reach their eternal rest. We can see him in the painting, almost at the edge of the picture, approaching the main scene. Hermes is the center of attention in the composition, from which the rest of the painting is executed. The deity is easily identifiable thanks to his unmistakable petasos (wide-brimmed hat) and also because, in his right hand, he carries his caduceus (a staff given to him by Apollo). In his role as a guide of souls (among other functions), likely, he has just left those recently deceased souls awaiting the arrival of Charon, who we have already seen approaching in the distance. The composition of souls surrounding Hermes is an exercise of virtuosity on the author’s part. All the dying faces have a very marked personality and different degrees of suffering. Some seem to pray directly to the deity, others are immersed in a strange post-mortem ecstasy, and there are also faces hidden in silence and poses reminiscent of a wake.
